Storing Charcoal Safely: Moisture, Ventilation and Self-Heating Prevention

Proper storage protects charcoal quality and your premises. Charcoal is combustible and can absorb moisture and lose efficiency, so a few simple rules matter.

1. Protect from moisture

Charcoal is porous and absorbs humidity. Damp charcoal is hard to light, smokes more and increases consumption. Store it on pallets, off the floor and away from walls, under cover.

2. Good ventilation

A well-ventilated warehouse limits heat and dust build-up. Avoid fully sealed spaces and long exposure to direct sun.

3. Prevent self-heating

Freshly produced charcoal can absorb oxygen and self-heat if packed or stacked in large volumes while still warm. Therefore:

  • Never pack or stack charcoal before it has fully cooled.
  • Avoid huge single stacks without aisles.
  • Monitor the temperature of large piles.

4. Warehouse layout

  • Leave aisles between rows.
  • Keep suitable fire extinguishers within reach.
  • No smoking or open flames.
  • Separate charcoal from other flammable materials.

5. At home and in cafés

Keep charcoal in its sealed pack or an airtight box away from heat, and never store used charcoal until it is completely extinguished.

We pack our charcoal after full cooling in sealed packaging. Learn more about our products.
