Charcoal is not a single product but a family of products that differ in how they are made, their density and their shape. Each type has an ideal use. This guide explains the key differences so you can choose the right charcoal for your business.
What is natural charcoal?
Charcoal is produced by heating wood in a low-oxygen environment (carbonisation). Moisture and volatile compounds are driven off, leaving mostly carbon. The more controlled the process and the denser the wood, the higher the carbon content, the longer the burn and the less smoke.
1. Natural lump charcoal
Natural pieces of charcoal in their original shape after carbonisation, graded by size. It lights quickly, burns hot and gives a natural flavour — which is why many grill professionals prefer it.
- Best for: grilling, restaurants, heating.
- Look for: even piece sizes, a metallic “clink” when tapped, and little dust at the bottom of the bag.
2. Shisha (pressed) charcoal
Made from finely ground charcoal mixed with a natural binder and pressed into moulds (cubes or hexagonal discs). The result is a uniform shape that burns slowly with steady heat.
- Best for: cafés, shisha lounges and home use.
- Look for: little, light-coloured ash, no odour or sparks, and a long burn time.
3. BBQ charcoal
Selected natural pieces or pressed briquettes designed for grilling, focused on high, stable heat for cooking large quantities.
4. Industrial charcoal
Supplied in bulk to factories, furnaces and foundries. What matters most is consistent specifications (fixed carbon, moisture, ash) from shipment to shipment and a competitive price per ton.
Quick comparison
| Type | Shape | Burn time | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural lump | Irregular pieces | Medium | Grilling & restaurants |
| Shisha charcoal | Cubes / discs | Very long | Shisha |
| BBQ | Selected pieces or briquettes | Long | High-volume grilling |
| Industrial | To specification | To specification | Factories & furnaces |
How to choose
Start with the application, then your monthly volume, then the packaging your customers need. If you are an importer, request a sample before signing and check moisture and ash. The Al-Ahd Charcoal team can help you pick the right product and prepare a sample.
