FOB or CIF? Choosing Incoterms When Buying Charcoal

When you ask for a charcoal quotation, the supplier will ask: FOB or CIF? These Incoterms define who pays for what and when responsibility transfers.

FOB — Free On Board

The supplier covers production, inland transport and export clearance until the goods are loaded on the vessel at the port of loading. After that, the importer pays ocean freight and insurance and bears the risk.

  • Good if: you have a freight forwarder with good rates and want control of shipping.

CFR — Cost and Freight

The supplier pays ocean freight to the destination port, but risk transfers to you at loading and insurance is yours.

CIF — Cost, Insurance and Freight

The supplier pays freight and insurance to the destination port, while risk transfers to you at loading.

  • Good if: you are a new importer who prefers a clear all-in price.

Comparing offers

Compare the total landed cost at your warehouse, not just the price per ton: add freight, insurance, port charges, clearance and inland transport.
