Professional importers don’t buy charcoal by appearance — they buy by the numbers. A certificate of analysis lists a few decisive parameters, and understanding them protects you from surprises.
1. Fixed carbon
The part that burns slowly and produces long-lasting embers. Higher fixed carbon means longer burn time and more energy. Well-carbonised charcoal has high fixed carbon.
2. Volatile matter
Gases and compounds released when charcoal is heated, causing flame and smoke. High values usually indicate incomplete carbonisation — parts that are still wood.
3. Moisture
Water in the charcoal. High moisture means you pay for water instead of charcoal, plus harder lighting and more smoke.
4. Ash
Mineral residue after complete combustion. Lower means purer charcoal.
5. Calorific value
The energy per kilogram, closely linked to fixed carbon.
Comparing two offers
- Make sure both analyses use the same basis (as received vs dry basis).
- Don’t look at price alone — cheaper charcoal with higher moisture may cost more in reality.
- Request a sample and test it in your own conditions.
