A sample is your only chance to judge quality before committing large sums. Don’t just look at it — test it systematically.
1. Weight and hardness
Good charcoal is relatively heavy for its size and rings when two pieces are tapped. Squeeze a piece: it shouldn’t crumble easily.
2. Ignition test
Light a fixed number of pieces the same way and time how long until they glow fully.
3. Burn time
Time from full ignition until the charcoal loses useful heat. Compare suppliers under identical conditions.
4. Ash
After complete burning, compare ash amount and colour. Less and lighter is better.
5. Odour and smoke
After full ignition there should be no chemical smell or heavy smoke.
6. Fines ratio
Empty a whole bag or carton, sieve it and weigh the fines and dust. A high ratio means waste.
Document the test
- Use the same burner and quantity for all samples.
- Record results in a table.
- Keep part of the approved sample as a reference.
