Lighting the charcoal correctly is the most important step for an enjoyable shisha session. Partly lit charcoal causes a bitter taste and harsh smoke, while proper lighting gives balanced heat throughout.
What you need
- A gas burner or electric charcoal heater.
- Metal tongs.
- A well-ventilated area.
Steps
1. Place the coals on the heat
Put the cubes on the burner grid with space between them for heat to circulate.
2. Wait, then flip
After about 4–5 minutes, flip each piece with tongs to heat the other side.
3. Check full ignition
Ready charcoal glows red on all sides with a thin layer of grey ash. Don’t use it if any black areas remain.
4. Tap off the ash
Gently tap off the outer layer before placing the coals on the bowl.
5. Place coals smartly
Start at the edges of the bowl and rotate the coals regularly to avoid burning the tobacco in one spot.
Common mistakes
- Using charcoal before it is fully lit.
- Placing too many pieces at once.
- Lighting indoors without ventilation — dangerous because of carbon monoxide.
Tip
The charcoal itself makes the difference: good pressed charcoal lights evenly and doesn’t crumble. Try Al-Ahd shisha charcoal.
